Agriculture Professionals Gather to Educate Wheat Growers on Increasing Profits

Agriculture professionals from across the country will gather in Michigan to teach wheat growers how to improve crop yields during meetings held in late February.

Experts from Michigan State University (MSU) Extension and the Michigan Wheat Program have coordinated these daylong meetings to help wheat growers generate greater profits through higher yields. Topics discussed will include weed and nitrogen management, profitability and disease control.

A portion of the meetings will focus on Phil Needham’s presentation on wheat establishment. As a consultant and owner of Needham Ag Technologies, Needham will provide a unique perspective on generating wheat yields. Neeeham’s background in wheat began on his family’s wheat farm in England. He holds a diploma in agriculture and an honors degree in agricultural technology from Cranfield University, England. Needham has written four wheat management guides for winter and spring wheat.

Martin Nagelkirk, MSU Extension educator, will discuss informative resources available to growers. William Kirk, MSU plant pathology associate professor, will present fungicide strategies. Gary Powell, MSU research technician, will discuss weed management techniques.

There will be two opportunities to attend the meeting. They will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on consecutive days in different locations. The first meeting will take place Feb. 27 at the Comfort Inn and Suites at 2424 S. Mission, Mount Pleasant, Mich. The second meeting will take place Feb. 28 at Cabela’s, 110 Cabela Blvd. E., Dundee, Mich.

The registration fee is $25 per person. Make check payable to MSU Extension and mail to MSU Extension Sanilac County, 37 Austin St., Sandusky, MI 48471. When registering, attendees should indicate which meeting they are attending. For more information, contact Nagelkirk at 810-648-2515.
