Better Process Control School offers certification courses

Certification courses from the Better Process Control School at Michigan State University (MSU) take place March 6–9 on the East Lansing, Mich., campus. A U.S. Food and Drug Administration federal regulation states that all container closure inspectors and operators of retorts, processing systems, and aseptic processing and packaging systems need to be under the supervision of an individual who has received necessary certification from an approved school.

The MSU Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition and the Grocery Manufacturers Association Science and Education Foundation sponsor the Better Process Control School, which offers supervisors instruction and testing for certification. Registration is available for two- or four-day courses. Registration fees include tuition, textbook, lunch and refreshment breaks. Courses and fees are as follows:

March 6-7, 2012: Two-day Acidified Foods Course only, $370 per person

March 6–9, 2012: Four-day Acidified Foods and Low-Acid Canned Foods Course, $730 per individual or $675 per individual when two or more people from the same company register together. This class will take place only if there are at least 15 people registered for this portion.

Schedule

  • Tuesday, March 6: Registration 7:30 a.m., Class 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.
  • Wednesday, March 7 – Thursday, March 8: Class 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.
  • Friday, March 9: Class 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.

A brief study session will be permitted at the end of each lecture and related discussion prior to the closed-book exam for each registrant’s specified subject.

Participants taking the final exam must pass with 70 percent or above to earn a certificate. Certificates stating the individual passed at 70 percent or higher will be sent within four weeks to those who pass.

Reimbursement is not available for those who withdraw or do not attend the course. A substitute from the same company may take the original registrant’s place.

The classes will take place at MSU’s Packaging Building.
