College of Ag and Natural Resources Tent at Ag Expo

The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR) tent, which has been a mainstay at Ag Expo for the past nine years, will feature expanded educational sessions and activities including a self-guided tour featuring a firsthand look at food production.

Educational displays featured during the very popular Breakfast on the Farm events will be showcased in this year’s CANR tent.

“We are looking forward to sharing what MSU Extension is doing to educate consumers about modern food production and to educate visitors on agriculture and livestock systems,” say MSU Extension agricultural literacy educators Mary Dunckel and Nancy Thelen.

Once again, the MSU Dairy Store will offer free ice cream, including popular flavors such as “Sesquicentennial Swirl.” Visitors are asked to make a donation, with all proceeds in support of the CANR Alumni Scholarship Fund.

James Whaley, a 4-H member from Byron, will be back again in the baby chicken booth. Whaley has his own business, Jimmy’s Farm Fresh Eggs, and enjoys teaching others about chickens. During Ag Expo, he will be moving newly hatched chicks from the incubator to the feeding pen and teaching visitors about what it takes to care for poultry.

Information about career options related to agriculture and natural resources will be available to visitors, who can also speak with representatives from the college’s undergraduate programs office and the CANR Alumni Association.

The CANR tent will again feature an educational stage with the following presentation topics slated: social media and new technology, pond management and gardening tips from MSU Extension Master Gardeners.

Visitors can also stop by the “Ask an Expert” booth and ask questions of MSU Extension experts.

Although not located in the college tent this year, the MSU Extension Bookstore will offer many of its popular publications free or for sale, some at show-discount rates.

Ag Expo runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., July 17 and 18, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., July 19. Admission to the grounds and parking at Farm Lane and Mt. Hope Road are free. For more information about Ag Expo, call 800-366-7055, or visit www.agexpo.msu.edu.

Ag Expo is hosted annually by the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Michigan State University Extension and AgBioResearch.
