2012 MSA Annual Meeting of Members

The 38th Michigan Soybean Association (MSA) Annual Meeting of Members was held on January 24, 2012 at the Zehnder’s Restaurant of Frankenmuth. Over 120 soybean farmers attended this meeting for a full day’s agenda about soy and a traditional Frankenmuth family-style chicken dinner.

Bushels of Soy Information at the 2012 MSA Annual Meeting of Members


The 38th Michigan Soybean Association (MSA) Annual Meeting of Members was held on January 24, 2012 at the Zehnder’s Restaurant of Frankenmuth. Over 120 soybean farmers attended this meeting for a full day’s agenda about soy and a traditional Frankenmuth family-style chicken dinner.

The agenda began with Val Vail-Shirey and Larry Julian of Julian Vail, LLC giving a report on the latest political issues impacting the soybean industry.

Annual meeting attendees also heard from Alan Kemper, ASA Chairman and a soybean farmer from Indiana. Alan spoke on ASA’s political involvement, necessity, and membership for the organization and the states.

Dr. Emerson Nafziger, University of Illinois soybean specialist, gave a presentation on the physiological differences between corn and soybeans. Dr. Nagziger’s presentation is available at www.michigansoybean.org under the Producer Resources tab.

Attendees also had the opportunity to hear an update on the Farm Produce Insurance Fund from the soybean representative on that board, Lyle LeCronier. Ted Methner, President of Cedar River Insurance Agency also spoke to the soybean producers on a new insurance discount program that is now available through Auto-Owners Insurance to all MSA members. The 2011 Soybean Yield Contest Awards took place in the afternoon. Six years of soybean yield contest information was presented by Mike Staton. Ned Birkey presented the soybean yield contest awards.

Attendees also heard from Dr. Christy Sprague, MSU weed specialist, on the new glyphosate resistant weed found in Michigan called Palmer amaranth. More information on this available at the MSPC web site and will also be in the next issue of Michigan Soybean News.

At this event, two new MSA Directors were elected: Dan Keenan from Merrill represents District 5 which covers Arenac, Bay, Lapeer, Saginaw, and Tuscola counties, and Norm Tanis from Imlay City was elected to the At-large District.
