Governor Snyder Declares October Agritourism Month

In recognition of the importance of the Agritourism industry to the state, Governor Rick Snyder has declared October 2014 to be Agritourism Month.

Agritourism businesses include farm markets, cider mills, pumpkin patches, petting zoos,  u-picks, wineries, farm stays and other locations where visitors can enjoy the current year’s bountiful harvest and experience fun on the farm.

“Autumn is the perfect time of year to visit a farm to sample and purchase a variety of Michigan products, from fresh, crisp apples, donuts and sweet cider, to pumpkins and pumpkin pies,” said Michigan Governor Rick Snyder. “Many agritourism operations also offer fun, family friendly activities like hay rides, corn mazes and pick-your-own orchards.”

According to the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the food and agriculture industry is a vital economic driver contributing over 96 billion dollars to our state’s economy each year.

“Agritourism enables many growers to diversify their farm income,” said Janice Benson, executive director for the Michigan Agritourism Association. “By inviting the public to enjoy special activities and events on the farm, growers can increase their sales and often expand their businesses into year-round operations. This also provides a wonderful opportunity for consumers to learn about local agriculture and make a connection with the people growing their food.”

Consumers can find a list of agritourism destinations across the state in the printed Michigan Agritourism Directory, online at www.michiganfarmfun.com, and on the Michigan Farm Market Finder iphone app. For more information, contact info@michiganfarmfun.com
