Second Annual Thanksgiving Turkey Sale Slated by Avian Science Club

The Michigan State University Avian Science Club will host its second annual Thanksgiving turkey sale over the next month and a half. The turkeys are fresh, Michigan State student grown.

The turkey fundraiser is in its second year with the Avian Science Club, which is only about five years old.

“We wanted a fundraiser that could garner support from the greater MSU community,” said Chad Risch, an Avian Science Club member, who is heading up the fundraiser. “We are a very specific club, but through fundraisers like the turkey sale, we want to get the word out about our club.”

Raised entirely by students at the MSU Poultry Farm, the turkeys are completely the students’ responsibilities. They are processed at MSU’s meat processing lab.

The Avian Science Club plans to use proceeds from the sale to help fund several students’ trip to the Atlanta International Poultry Expo.

“The expo is a great place to find internships and full-time jobs, and really helps us learn about ways to expand the industry,” Risch said.

The club plans to continue the turkey sale fundraiser as they have received only positive feedback. More than half the turkeys sold so far this year have been sold to past customers.

“People appreciate the freshness of our turkeys,” Risch said.

Club members are raising a limited supply of turkeys for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Turkeys are available for $2 per pound; most range from 11 to 16 pounds. Order a turkey through students in the MSU Avian Science Club or through Risch at rischcha@msu.edu.

Turkey pick up is slated from 2 to 7 p.m., Nov. 22 and 23 at the MSU Meat Lab.
