Devon Davidson
Working as a GreenStone intern is different from any summer job I have ever had. In my role as the legal intern, I am applying so much of what I am learning at Michigan State University majoring in statistics and minoring in actuarial science and economics. GreenStone’s mission is what initially stood out to me during my internship search, with serving farmers and rural communities being the focus.
Farming is important to my family. My grandfather is a farmer and my father used to farm part-time. Growing up in the farming community of Shepherd, Michigan, I believe I have a good foundation in agriculture. Going into my internship program, I wanted to expand on this foundation. I want to better understand the farm credit system and learn how to apply the skills I have learned in academia to the real world. I truly believe farmers are some of the most honest and hardworking people, and I liked the idea of working with them and other rural community members.
As the legal intern, I specifically work on analyzing HMDA – Home Mortgage Disclosure Act – data, making sure we comply with regulations and match other home mortgage lenders. Working with these large data sets, it is required that I pay extreme attention to detail and remain focused and disciplined as to not miss anything important. I was prepared for this position due to my role as the Trombone Squad Leader in the Spartan Marching Band. This leadership position requires much of the same focus and discipline. As a Squad Leader, I am responsible for teaching the younger trombone players different routines and chants, as well as how the band is expected to march. Everyone understands and interprets information differently, and it is my responsibility as a leader to meet their needs so everyone is on the same page and we can present ourselves as one cohesive squad. These skills are significant in my internship, as it is very important for me to analyze and understand the way different people comprehend information so I can present it effectively.
This internship position is undoubtedly teaching me many new skills, and it is allowing me to build upon the skills I already had. This is one of my favorite parts about my role, as well as one of my favorite aspects of GreenStone as a company. I am looking forward to the rest of the summer and bringing new skills learned at GreenStone into my senior year at Michigan State through academics and leading the trombones in the Spartan Marching Band.
